For the child or the humble beginner, Kids One offers a flash-based online program to help you learn Hindi. (There is also an option for learning Telugu.) The Kids One Hindi E-learning page employs colorful animations and interactive lessons to help you both remember and use the language. There are sections on learning the alphabet, both pronunciation and writing in Devanagari, folk tales, information about the Mahabharata, Ramadan, festivals and heroes, all done in Hindi. Each section is useful, but Kids One also offers a games and activities section which features ten online games. Some of the games are simple children's games, such as picture puzzles, but there are several good games geared toward practicing what you have learned. There is a game in which you must arrange vowels in the correct order, memory games and matching games. Kids One's Hindi page is free to view up to a certain point, after which you will have to register for $5. (see references 1)
Digital Dialects offers a beginner's page more targeted at beginning adults. Here you can learn numbers, colors, animals and more vocabulary. The page is done in transliterated Hindi, Hindi written in English letters, not Devanagari. Each section consists of Hindi material and then games reinforcing the concepts. For example, in the colors section, there is first a page explaining the names of colors in Hindi, followed by a matching game in which you are given the Hindi word and must click on the correct corresponding color on a color wheel. Transparent Language is the developer of the "Before You Know It" series of language-learning software. Commonly simply called "BYKI" (pronounced bye-kee), it is offered both for free, called BYKI Express, and in a more complex paid version which unlocks more privileges, BYKI Deluxe. BYKI comes in over 70 languages, including Hindi. BYKI uses a flash card style to teach Hindi words and phrases. You can look at the flash cards as often as you like, listen to them being said by native speakers, and, when you believe you have them memorized, complete quizzes and games for you to prove your Hindi prowess.
