An important element in learning most languages is vocabulary. Latin word searches give students a chance to build their vocabulary by engaging in an age-old past time. Customize word searches to fit any level of study and size of group. For those students who prefer a contest, set up Latin word seeks as races between individuals or groups. There are also some online resources for those looking for a premade word search puzzle. (See Resource 1.)
The Internet has made learning most languages -- even Latin -- much easier with the proliferation of simple flash video games. A number of online flash games are available for free. These games focus on a variety of skill building challenges such as vocabulary and grammar. In "Rocket Polluter," for example, players have to match questions with definitions in Latin (see Resource 2). The various online flash games are designed for a variety of skill levels and some of them are even customizable.
Volo/Nolo is a game designed by Ellen McHenry, herself a student of Latin. The game focuses on forming simple but complete sentences beginning with either "volo" ("I want to") or "nolo" (a form of "I do not want to"). Students construct these simple sentences based on 75 common words and phrases. This game gives students a chance to develop a workable vocabulary and to construct their own meaningful sentences, rather than just repeating vocabulary words. (See Resource 3.)
This game is meant for two or more students and is appropriate for all levels. Students take turns building upon a story, in Latin, started by the instructor or one of the students. Each student must add two or three sentences based on the previous sentences and must focus on keeping the story going. This game allows students to build spoken as well as listening skills in Latin and gives them a chance to use the language in conversation.
