Games to Help Kids Learn ABCs

Identifying the letters of the alphabet is a fundamental skill and a precursor to reading and writing. Teach young children the letters using a variety of creative games. Make learning the ABCs an engaging and enjoyable experience.
  1. Body Letters

    • Use movement to teach letters.

Play this game outside or in a large area such as a gym. Instruct children to move around the area until the whistle blows. Have them use different movements such as skipping, jogging or galloping. Blow the whistle and call out a letter of the alphabet. Children must quickly form the letter using their bodies. They can do this independently or join other children to create the letter together. Choose to have them make upper- or lower-case letters.

    Hat Pull

    • Use card stock or index cards to make 26 flashcards. Print a letter of the alphabet on each card. Shuffle the cards and place them in a hat or other container. Have children take turns choosing a card from the hat. Each child must say the name of the letter he chooses, then say a word that begins with the letter.

    Snap

    • Make flashcards using card stock or index cards. Print a letter of the alphabet on each card. Begin with 8 to 10 letters. Make two identical sets of cards. Shuffle the cards and give each child a set. Have them place their cards in a pile, facing down. Simultaneously, children flip over one card. If the letters match, a child calls out "Snap!" and wins the two cards. Children continue turning over cards until all the matches are made. The child with the most matches wins. Add more letters to the game as the children learn more of the alphabet.

    Animal Alphabet

    • Have children sit in a circle. Choose a broad topic such as types of animals, places or things to eat. The first player must say a word that fits the topic beginning with the letter "A." The next player says a word beginning with the letter "B." The game continues until the letter "Z" is reached. If a player cannot think of a word, she can pass and let the next person try.
