How You Set Up Activities to Help Children Learn

Kids best learn through activities and with the number of children in need of assistance with their school work, any time is the perfect time to set up activities to help them learn. You don't need to be an educator to tutor kids, but brainstorming with a few teachers is an excellent way to come up with ideas for keeping their attention. For example, you may want to teach kids to learn through guided reading, diversity or storytelling activities. Learn how the kids' teachers are introducing the topic and avoid it. Find fun, interactive activities for the best result.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask teachers about subjects with which you can assist kids. There may be a need for math, English and musical assistance. You must know of a need before you can try to fill it.

    • 2

Find a location to house the activities. Local schools and churches may have a room, cafeteria or gymnasium you can use for free or at a low cost.

    • 3

Select a time and date dedicated to the activities. It should not last too long or you will lose the children's attention. Plan for your activities to last from one to two hours.

    • 4

Announce your activities online, in the newspaper and at schools, day care centers and churches. People must know about your event in order for you to have children attend.

    • 5

Recruit volunteers. Depending on the number of kids who attend it may be necessary for you to have a few more adults. You will be able to provide personalized attention and maybe offer more activities with the extra help.

    • 6

Select activities. You could have game nights with the focus being different school subjects and hand out prizes to winners, work on science experiments to show kids cause and effect or read books and answer questions about it to expand comprehension. Your setup will vary according to the activity you choose. If you are going to make a two liters of soda erupt by putting sugar candy in it, you might want to set up a table in the grass to make clean up easy. Or if you are showing kids how to use math while cooking, you might want to work at a long table in a cafeteria.

    • 7

Purchase materials like pens, pencils, paper, markers, paint, crayons, calculators and books. The items you need will vary depending on the subject you decide to teach the kids. Put your material into closed boxes, so you can transport them with ease.
