Games to Help Kids Learn Spanish

Spanish is becoming an increasingly popular language for children to learn. Learning a language other than their primary one can be helpful in many ways. These include improved communication skills, appreciation for other cultures as well as an edge on the job market. There are also a growing number of resources to help children learn different languages such as web sites that offer lessons and different game ideas.
  1. Picture Dictionaries

    • Many Spanish teaching websites offer picture dictionaries that break vocabulary down into categories such as farm animals, clothing, colors and sports. These categories give the pictures of different objects related to the subject as well as the word that goes with it. By clicking on the name of the object or animal, the user is directed to other related materials.

    Matching

    • A variety of matching games are available on the Internet for children to use such as drag and match games. These games help children associate words with pictures and also give the pronunciation of each word. When a child drags the word to the picture he thinks it belongs to and if it is correct, the picture is highlighted green. There are many categories ranging from animals to actions and adjectives.

    Memory Games

    • Memory games are a good way for children to learn Spanish. These games help children learn the names of objects that go with the images. As a card is chosen, the name of it is said in Spanish. As with all memory games, the child must remember where each image is.

Tips on Teaching Spanish to Children

    • Starting early helps to develop fluency in a language. Children as young as two can begin to understand secondary languages, according to research. Teaching grammar and phrases that are useful for certain age groups is also helpful. Teaching a small child numbers and colors will help her feel accomplished.
