Fun Games to Learn the Parts of Speech

Learning the parts of speech can be fun when you create games to use as teaching tools. Help children learn the parts of speech by creating a variety of fun games that will help them build their skills as they grow. Adapt the game to the age of the children, making simple games that you can turn into more complicated word games as children grow. Use basic craft materials to make card and board games for home or school use.
  1. Name that Part of Speech

    • Start with a list of words from all parts of speech. Make small paper tags with strings attached and write the words on individual tags. For young children, add images. Create a board from poster board or foam board. Place adhesive hooks on the board for each of the parts of speech and have kids try to hang the tags on the correct hook. Make it a game for several children by giving points for each correct tag. Decorate the tags and board to make it more enjoyable.

Pin the Part of Speech on the Sentence

    • Help kids identify the part of the speech in a sentence by using a reusable magnetized dry erase board. Write sentences on the board; write the parts of speech on paper that you will glue onto individual magnets. Start with simple sentences for young children and expand to complicated sentences later. Have kids pin the magnets on the correct part of speech. As they learn the basics, ask them to expand the words in the sentence to include additional parts of speech.

    Build a Complete Sentence

    • Create a deck of playing cards from card stock. Make several cards, each with one word. Play the game by having the first player place any card face up on the table and identify the part of speech. Each player will add a word to the sentence and identify the part of speech. When someone is not able to add a card that makes sense in the sentence, start a new sentence. The game ends when one player has no cards left, or continues until all the cards are down on the table. For young children, write the part of speech on the back or bottom of the card.

    Fill in the Blanks

    • Write several words for each of the parts of speech on small slips of paper or card stock and pile them in the middle of the table. Write a sentence with several words missing. Have each child pick a slip from the pile and try to make the word fit into the sentence. If it does, explain what the part of speech is and how it works in the sentence. If it does not fit in the sentence, the next person takes a turn. When the sentence is complete, have all the slips thrown back into the pile and start a new sentence.
