Instructions

Familiarize yourself with the eight parts of speech: noun, verb, adjective, pronoun, adverb, preposition, conjunction and interjection. Most adults and teachers have no trouble explaining the most common parts of speech, but it can be tricky explaining a preposition, for example, without a clear understanding of its exact function. The University of Ottawa's website has a clear, easy to understand explanation of the parts of speech.

Display the information you've collected on the parts of speech for students to copy in writing. A classroom board, overhead projector or easel paper are common ways to display written information for a group. In an individual or small group setting, you can use printouts. Have students copy the information in a notebook.

Use games to practice and review the information presented in your tutorial. Mad Libs boasts that it is "the world's greatest party game," and is a time-tested method for teaching and learning parts of speech. There are many free resources available online for printing Mad Libs. Mad Libs games rarely cover prepositions or conjunctions, so you will need to present other review games. (See Resources for PowerPoint game templates.)
