How to Teach Kids the Parts of Speech

To make students better readers and writers, it is important to teach them the parts of speech. There are eight essential parts of speech: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, pronoun, conjunction and interjection. When first teaching students the parts of speech, teachers should focus on nouns, verbs, and adjectives. There are many options for making these lessons enjoyable for students, while at the same time teaching them important grammar skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Make various diagrams of the parts of speech and hang them on the wall in the classroom. For example, a noun could be in a circle shape with the definition of a noun -- person, place or thing -- inside the circle. Every time students need to refer to what a noun is, they can look up on the wall. Do this for the other main parts of speech as well. Verbs could be a square with "action word" in the center, and adjectives would be a "descriptive word," which can be represented by a triangle. Use different colors for the various shapes.

    • 2

Pass out magazines to the class. Have them cut words out of the magazine, making sure they are cutting out a variety of nouns, verbs and adjectives. Each student will then create a sentence from their words, and paste the sentence on a piece of paper. After everyone has built a sentence, students share their sentences with the class and identify nouns and verbs. This will help students see how parts of speech are put together to form sentences.

    • 3

Create flash cards with entire sentences on them. Underline one word -- a noun, verb or adjective -- from each sentence. Hold up a card at a time so students can identify which part of speech the underlined word represents. Turn the card over to reveal the answer.

    • 4

Play Around the World with the parts of speech. Two students come to front of the classroom where the teacher shows them a card. The card is either a part of speech or a sentence with the part of speech underlined. The first student to correctly guess the part of speech on the card wins the round. The student who did not answer correctly sits down, and the winner of the round continues on. The first student to rotate all the way around the classroom and back to his seat while naming the parts of speech is the winner.
