Copy or print your own letter onto an overhead transparency. Copy or write the version of the letter that you intend to teach, either a friendly letter or a business letter. Whichever type of letter you are teaching, ensure that all of the key components are represented, clear and easy to read.
Place the letter on an overhead transparency and project the image onto a screen or a flat, non-reflective wall.
Review the parts of the letter with students, starting with the heading. Use an overhead marker to label the parts of the letter as you review them. Explain the importance of each part of the letter. For example, the body includes the main point, or the purpose for writing the letter.
Inform students about the type of language that should be used in a letter. In a friendly letter, casual language is appropriate; in a business letter, avoid jargon.
Provide students with pen and paper. Encourage them to write their own version of the type of letter they have been taught.
Review students' sample letters to determine whether they comprehend how to compose a letter. Provide a review lesson if needed.
