How Teachers Can Respect Diversity in Their Classroom

A culturally diverse classroom includes children of different races, genders and ethnicities. It also includes children with different strengths, abilities, disabilities, personalities, interests, lifestyles and family structures. As a teacher it is important to respect and embrace the differences among children in the classroom and create an environment of cultural awareness and respect.
  1. Display Diversity in Visual Materials

    • Display posters and books that include children of different races, genders and abilities. This allows all children to identify with what they are seeing and fosters a feeling of belonging rather than separation. This also helps children learn to accept and become comfortable with children who may act, look, or dress differently than they do.

    Include a Multicultural Library

    • Build a library of of diverse, unbiased books. Literature should include characters of all races, genders and abilities. Books can not only make sure all children are represented but can also teach children about different cultures and lifestyles. Books can teach children about racial and gender tolerance and the importance of respecting others who look or act differently than they do, and can help children understand concepts such as adoption, divorce, having a single parent or having two same-sex parents.

    Incorporate Diversity Year-Round

    • Diversity is present at all times and is not limited to special times of the year. While special holiday and history months can be recognized and celebrated, discussion of the history or customs of different groups of people should not be limited to these times. For instance, the discussion of black history should not only be limited to Black History Month.

    Implement Zero Bullying Tolerance

    • Have absolutely zero tolerance for discrimination or bullying of any kind. Do not allow bad treatment of any child because of skin color, dress, speech, physical limitations or any other reason. Children need to respect each other and learn it is never OK to put down another child, especially for differences.
