Students learning about how to convert fractions to decimals often have to show their work by hand by dividing the numerator (the top number in a fraction) by its denominator (the number on the bottom) and rendering the result as a decimal. In more advanced classes, students are often allowed to make these calculations with the help of a calculator. If you know that a fraction simply represents the process of dividing the numerator by the denominator, producing a decimal from a fraction can be done with a few keystrokes.

1
Power up your calculator. Enter the top number, or numerator, of the fraction you need to convert to a decimal. For example, key in the numerator of the fraction 3/8, which is three.
-
2
Press the "divide" key once. This tells the calculator that the number you entered, three, will be divided by the next number you input, which is the denominator eight.

3
Type in the eight and press the key marked with the "equal" sign to receive your answer. In the example, the numerator three divided by the denominator eight equals .375.
