How to Do Simple Hypergeometrics on the TI-83 Plus

Hypergeometrics, despite the name, are part of the probability and statistics family of mathematics. It is a way of mapping probabilities, and can be described as the opposite of binomial distribution. Although there is no function on the TI-83+ that will allow you to solve hypergeometrics, the calculator is capable of computing the hypergeometric function and solving problems. Using a TI-83+ streamlines the process of doing simple hypergeometrics compared to solving them by hand.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the formula and your given variables for the hypergeometrics problem to serve as reference. We will use the formula and variables as follows:

      P(x) = {C(k, x) * C(N-k, n-x)} / C(N, n)

      P(1) when N = 10, n = 2, and k = 1

    • 2

Substitute your variables into your formula so it appears like this:

      P(1) = {C(1, 1) --- C(10-1, 2-1)} ÷ C(10, 2)

    • 3

Input "(", "(", and the numerical value assigned to "k", which is your probability.

    • 4

Press "MATH" and "Right Arrow" three times, selecting "PRB" and "1".

    • 5

      Select "1", ")", "(", and "9".

    • 6

      Repeat step 4, then enter "1", ")", ")", "÷", and "12".

    • 7

Repeat step 4 again, and input "2".

    • 8

      Press "ENTER" to solve.
