How to Teach Landforms to Kids

Land forms are the topography of the Earth. Some are dry, hot deserts. Others are cold, harsh arctic settings. The largest are mountains or volcanoes, but even the valleys between the mountains are land forms. Learning about these earthly wonders is a good way for students to study the world around them as well as its wider global aspects.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify different types of land forms to students. Have them identify the characteristics of mountains, valleys, peninsulas, islands and plains. One idea is to provide them with magazines to find pictures of each land form.

    • 2

Have students tell you everything they know or think they know about each land form. This helps you identify misconceptions to address later.

    • 3

Divide students into groups and have each group research and prepare a report on one type of land form.

    • 4

Ask students to identify land forms they are aware of in your local area and add to the list with some they may not have thought of. Point out any land forms, such as mountains, visible from your school's playground. If possible, arrange a field trip to a local land form.

    • 5

Instruct students to make a model land form. Some ideas include using modeling clay to make mountains or volcanoes, building an island in a plastic container filled with water, creating a diorama of a desert or arctic setting or painting an island or peninsula. This could be a group activity connected to a group research project.
