How to Program a TI 83 Plus Calculator

If you have a TI-83 Plus calculator, you can program it for the same types of applications you use on your cell phone or notepad. The TI-83 Plus features a program editor where you can enter special commands that let you place graphics on the screen, store and retrieve personal data such as contact lists, and automatically compute solutions to business, physics, chemistry and statistics problems. It's a good idea to learn how to access the program editor and familiarize yourself with the commonly used commands and menus on the TI-83 Plus.

      Press the "ON" key to activate the TI-83.

      Press the "PRGM" key to create and name a file to enter in your program. Select "NEW" on the dialog box that appears on the screen. Use the "down arrow" key to move the screen cursor over to option 1, "Create New". Press the "ENTER" key on your keyboard.

      Press the "2nd" key, then press the "ALPHA" key to place the TI-83's keyboard in alphabetical mode. Type in a name of the program on the blank line that appears. Use the letter labels above the individual keys on your keyboard as your guide for typing letters. Type the file name.

      Press the "PRGM" key again to display the command menu list. Scroll down the list of control commands that appear with the "down arrow cursor control" key.

      Write down the list of control statements on the menu so that the list includes the control commands:

      If, Else, For, While, End, Lbl and GoTo.

      Review these commands in your Texas Instrument's TI-83 manual so you know what they are used for, how they operate, and the correct syntax needed to use them.

      Use the "right arrow cursor" key to select the I/O (input/output ) list of commands. Write down the list of I/O statements from the this menu to include Input, Prompt, Disp, DispGraph, DispTable, Output, getKey, ClrHome, ClrTable, GetCalc, Get and Send. Review these commands in the TI-83 manual so you know what they are used for, how they operate, and the correct syntax needed to use them.

      Locate the "STO" key on your keyboard. This key is often used to type program statements into the TI-83 Plus' program editor that assign numbers to variables, such as Z=3. Use the "ALPHA" key to type variables into the program editor such as "x" and "z." For commands that require letters, use the "STO" command.
