Press the "ON" key (row 10, column 1) to turn on the TI-89. Locate the primary TI-89 graphing keys on the TI-89's keyboard: the "diamond" key (row 3, column 1), the "F1" key (row 1, column 1), the "F2" key (row 1, column 2), and the "F3" key (row 1, column 3).
Press the "diamond" key and then press the "F1" key to display the equation editor. Press the "x" key on your keyboard (row 5, column 1) and observe that the letter x is placed on the first line in the equation editor. Press the "ENTER" key (row 10, column 5) to store the equation "y=x" into your TI-89's memory.
Press the "diamond" key and then press the "F2" key to display the graph scaling parameters for your graph (the graph window). Press the "(-)" key (row 10, column 4) and then press the "5" key (row 8, column 3) to set "xmin", the minimum value displayed on the x-axis, to -5.
Press the "cursor down arrow" key (the oblong key with an arrow pointing down in the third row near the right side of the calculator) to the "xmax" menu option. Press the "5" key to set "xmax", the maximum value displayed on the x-axis, to 5.
Press the "diamond" key and then press the "F3" key to graph the equation you entered with the "xmin" and "xmax" values you specified for the graph window. Observe that a straight line is graphed on the screen.
Press the "F3" key again to find specific points on the line graph (tracing). Press the cursor left arrow (a circular key with an arrow pointing to the left) to move the screen cursor along the line that has been graphed. Observe that the numerical values of the x-coordinate and the y-coordinate that correspond to any point on the line over which the cursor passes are displayed on the left- and right-hand side of the graph.
