How to Insert an Absolute Value on a T1-86 Calculator

The TI-86 graphing calculator affords its users some flexibility, allowing them to customize some of its main keys with important and frequently accessed mathematical operations. The calculator's absolute value function, which calculates the positive representation of any signed input, is located within a menu that requires a series of keypunches to access. With the calculator's customization feature, you can insert the absolute function into a single key and accelerate its calculation.

Instructions

    • 1

      Press the yellow "2nd" key located at the top left of the keypad, then press the "Custom" key.

      Press the "F1" key under the screen to access the catalog. The absolute value function will be automatically selected.

      Press the "F3" key to instruct the calculator to store the function elsewhere, then press a key from "F1" to "F5" under the screen to store the function on the corresponding key. For an example, to store the absolute value function on "F2," press the "F2" key.

      Press the "Custom" key then the appropriate "F" key where the absolute value function is stored to access the function. In this example, press "Custom" then press " F2." The command "abs" will appear on the left side of the screen.

      Enter a number and press "Enter" to calculate its absolute value.
