Probabilities With a TI-83

The TI-83 is a basic graphing calculator manufactured by Texas Instruments. While capable of graphing a large number of complex mathematical functions, the calculator is designed to be user friendly and comes from the factory with the formulas required to calculate probabilities. All that is required to use the probabilities functionality built into the calculator is access to the calculator's "VARS" (variables) menu.
  1. Basic Operations

    • Despite its capabilities, the TI-83 is designed to be easy to operate. To turn the calculator on, Press the "ON" button located in the bottom left corner of the keypad. Enable access to the menus displayed above the calculator keys by pressing the "2nd" button located in the upper left corner of the calculator's keypad.

    Accessing the VARS Menu

    • To access the probabilities functionality built into the calculator, VARS access is required. The "VARS" button is located to the left of the "Down" directional key. After pressing the "VARS" button, use the calculator's down arrow key to highlight the option for "0:binompdf(". Select this option by pressing the "Enter" key located in the bottom right corner of the calculator.

    Calculating Probabilities

    • After selecting "0:binompdf(" from the "VARS" menu, calculate the P(X = x) by entering the "N", "P" and "X" figures given into the calculator and then pressing the "Enter" key. After pressing the "Enter" key, the correct calculation to four decimal places will be displayed on the calculator's screen.

    Alternative Method for Calculating Probabilities

    • Calculate the P(X less than or equal to x) by selecting the "A:binompdf(" menu as opposed to the "0:binompdf(" menu. When in the correct menu, enter the "N", "P" and "X" figures given into the calculator and then press the "Enter" key. The correct calculation to four decimal places will be displayed on the calculator's screen after the "Enter" key is pressed.
