How to Use Y1 on a TI-83

The TI-83 is a calculator designed by Texas Instruments that is capable of graphing advanced two-dimensional functions. When solving for certain equations, such as those that begin with "F(x)=" or "y=", it is convenient to use a TI-83. You can solve algebra equations with graphing by using the "Y=" function on your TI-83 and inputting the equation into the "Y1" line. This article will help guide you through using this function.

Instructions

    • 1

      Power on your TI-83 calculator and press "Clear" to eliminate any previous work that may interfere with your new equation.

    • 2

      Press "Y=" to launch the "Y" function of your calculator, and clear any data that is present.

    • 3

      Enter in your equation. For example if your equation was: F(x)=5x+2, your screen would appear as "\Y1=5x+2".

    • 4

      Press "Window" to adjust the settings for your equation. Default settings are acceptable for this equation, they should appear on your calculator as the following:

      Xmin=-10

      Xmax=10

      Xscl=1

      Ymin=-10

      Ymax=10

      Yscl=1

      Xres=1

    • 5

      Press "Graph" to graph the equation you inputted into "Y1", record your results as necessary.
