How to Use Addition to Solve a Literal Equation

A literal equation involves solving for a lettered variable. From every level of math from pre-algebra up to calculus, there are literal equations to solve. Depending on the particular equation, different operations are necessary to find a solution. When you need to isolate a variable, addition is one of the steps you'll need to take.

Instructions

    • 1

      Isolate the variable in a literal equation. For example, let's use the equation 3x - 11 = 4 - 2x.

    • 2

Add 2x to both sides of the equation to move the variable to the left of the equal sign. That gives you 5x - 11 = 4.

    • 3

Now, add 11 to both sides of the equation to fully isolate the variable. That gives you 5x = 15.

    • 4

Divide both sides by 5. That gives you the answer: x = 3.
