How to Solve Geometric Equations

In geometry, most equations contain multiple variables that you need to solve separately to find a final answer. This form of equation is known as a literal equation. The key to solving literal equations is knowing your geometric rules and being able to apply them. Whenever possible, have a sheet with all the common rules listed to help you solve the equations.

Instructions

    • 1

Write out the equation you must solve. For instance, A=bh for a rectangle with the area being 20 and the height being 4.

    • 2

Determine the first variable you need to solve. In this example equation, you must solve for b, which is the base.

    • 3

Find a rule that will allow you to solve for b. In this case, a/x=b/x.

    • 4

Isolate your variable using the rule. For the example, the equation becomes A/h=b.

    • 5

Plug in the information you already have and solve for your missing variable. So the problem becomes 20/4=b, thus b=5.
