Like other middle schools around the country, military middle schools place a strong emphasis on academics. While the goal of the schools is to prepare students for high school, many military schools also provide students with a foundation that they can take with them as they pursue post-secondary educational opportunities. In addition to teaching students in mathematics, English, science, social studies and arts, military middle schools also focus on time management, organization and study skills.
Military middle schools also offer students an opportunity to pursue extracurricular activities in a number of athletic and artistic areas. While many military schools have sports, music and drama opportunities, military educational institutions offer many unique activities. Institutions such as Riverside Military Academy offer students a chance to participate in a ranger program that teaches them about kayaking, hiking, rock climbing and physical fitness. Platoon training, which offers students a better understanding of military training, is also available.
Character development is a major focus in military middle schools. These schools want to provide students with a quality education, and assist them in their personal growth and leadership skills. In order to help students develop character, military middle schools promote good citizenship, personal integrity and social responsibility. Concentration is also placed on decision-making, integrity and judgment.
Students in military middle schools reside in residential dormitories on campus. Students eat on campus at a dining hall. A strict schedule is maintained throughout the school year, and trips may be organized for students to provide them with an opportunity to attend events and attractions. Many military schools also require students to attend chapel and religious services during the week.
