Long words and phrases are commonly encountered when writing. When working on a written assignment, a long phase or word may be repeated several times throughout. In order to save time and space, there is a way to shorten specific words or phrases into a letter or group of letters. Called abbreviation, this process allows writers to condense the assignment. The phrase "compact disc" can be condensed into its own abbreviation, and can even be pluralized.

Extract the first letter from both "compact" and "disc." Capitalize the two letters, and add them together to form the abbreviation CD.

Refrain from using periods or spaces in between CD, because the abbreviation only has capital letters.

Add the letter "s" in its lowercase form to the end of "CD." The pluralized version of the abbreviation is "CDs." Make sure that the "s" is added without an apostrophe or any italicization.
