Identify the correct parts of the two fractions you are comparing. The denominator describes how many parts are in the whole. The numerator describes how many parts of the whole are available. The top number of the first fraction is numerator 1 and the top number of the second fraction is numerator 2. The bottom numbers are denominators 1 and 2.
Cross-multiply numerator 1 with denominator 2. The product is called the first cross-product. Repeat the multiplication process with numerator 2 and denominator 1 to find the second cross product.
Compare the cross-products. The fractions are equivalent if the cross-products are equal. If the first cross-product is larger, the first fraction is larger. If the second cross-product is larger, then so is the second fraction.
