How to Combine Art and Literacy in Preschool Classrooms

Preschool students get a head start on learning to socialize and becoming familiar with concepts that many children are not exposed to until they reach kindergarten. Basic phonics and reading skills are a focus of preschool curriculums. For kids this young, it is helpful to combine visual concepts and expressive art with language and writing. Preschool students are just becoming aware of their surroundings and starting to make sense of them. As their sensory faculties develop, children learn by harmonizing visual cues.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the English alphabet with colorful chalk on a blackboard at the front of the preschool classroom and plan to leave it up throughout the school year. Familiarize students with the appearance and sound of each letter by having them draw the letters themselves on construction paper and the board. Conduct loud group chants and vocalization exercises to promote memorization.

    • 2

Direct each child to pick their favorite letter, along with markers, crayons and white drawing paper. Help the students choose concrete subjects, such as animals and notable characters, to illustrate each letter according to the spelling of the word. For example, the letter 'c' could represent 'cat.'

    • 3

Guide the children in drawing their favorite letter next to their chosen subject in bright colors on the page, making a connection between the sound of the alphabet letter and the word represented by their drawing. Ask volunteers to present their illustrations to their classmates and hang all of the vibrant drawings on the wall.
