Open a new document in a word processing program. Select "Arial" or "Times New Roman" from the font drop-down menu at the top of the page to make the text easy to read. Then set the point size to 12 point. Enter the date of the letter at the top of the document, and proceed to write the reading log letter.
Write a salutation to greet parents and guardians of each student, such as "Dear Parent or Guardian" in the beginning of the letter. Enter the student's name after the salutation if writing an individual letter to the parent of a student. An example would be "Dear Parent or Guardian of Sally Jones."
Provide a brief explanation to parents about the reading log and its purpose in the first paragraph of the letter. Include the date the reading log was given to students, and what the assignment entails, such as the number of days and amount of time each student is expected to read. Explain to parents what students must do after reading, such as writing the title of each book in the reading log and obtain a parent signature after completing the assignment.
Describe what parents and guardians should see when reviewing the reading log in the second paragraph of the letter. For example, students may need to identify the major and minor points of the story, as well as the theme. Explain how completing the reading log helps students understand each story read, while helping parents verify that daily reading assignments are being fulfilled.
Conclude the information about the reading log assignment in the third paragraph of the letter. State the steps parents can take to help teachers keep kids on track, and how teachers will use the reading log to help students reach their reading goals. Include important information, such as the number of reading logs sent home with each student for the month, to help parents follow the progress of each student.
End the reading log letter with a closing salutation, such as "Thank You" or "Sincerely," followed by your name and title. Request parent or guardian signatures below the closing salutation, to acknowledge the letter was received by parents and guardians. Save and print the reading log letters on completion.
