According to the Leather Sleeves newsletter, letters were sometimes used as parts of uniforms for various sports in the 1800s. Later in the 1900s, letters as patches began to be awarded as a symbol of athletic achievement. Although sweaters were the primary means of displaying these letters at first, heavy jackets were incorporated in the 1930s. This tradition is still carried on in many high schools today. Boys and girls can display multiple varsity sports on their letterman jackets as symbols of pride in their schools and their own accomplishments.
