How Do I Calculate Multiple Percentages?

Percentages represent ratios as being out of 100. For example, 34 percent of balls are purple means that 34 out of every 100 balls will be purple. When you have a percent, you can find the amount meeting your criteria out of any total. However, sometimes you have multiple percentages that you need to satisfy, such as the percentage of students that are a certain class level and a percentage that are a certain gender.

Instructions

    • 1

Convert the percentages to a decimal by dividing by 100. For example, if 27 percent of students are freshmen and 48 percent of freshmen are men, divide 27 by 100 to get 0.27 and divide 48 by 100 to get 0.48.

    • 2

Multiply the two percentages to find the percent of the total that meets your criteria. For this example, multiply 0.27 by 0.48 to get 0.1296.

    • 3

Multiply the product by the total to find the percentage of the original that meets your criteria. Completing the example, if you have 10,000 students at the school, multiply 10,000 by 0.1296 to find that 1,296 students are freshman males.
