How to Calculate Winning Percentages With Ties

Winning percentage represents the proportion of games that a team wins. For simple win-loss records, you can divide the number of wins by the total number of games. With ties, the formula becomes more complicated. For the purposes of calculating winning percentage, a tie counts as half a win and half a loss. To find the winning percentage with ties, you need to know the team's record: wins, losses and ties.

Instructions

    • 1

Multiply the number of ties by 0.5. For example, if the team's record is 50 wins, 28 losses and 30 ties, multiply 30 by 0.5 to get 15.

    • 2

Add the number of wins the team has to the Step 1 result. In this example, add 15 to 50 to get 65.

    • 3

Add the team's number of wins, losses and ties to find the total number of games played. In this example, add 50 plus 28 plus 30 to get 108.

    • 4

Divide the number of wins plus half the number of ties by the number of total games to find the winning percentage. In this example, divide 65 by 108 to find the winning percentage equals 0.6018, or 60.18 percent.
