How to Find the Percentage Equivalent to a Fraction

Percentages represent a number out of 100. For example, 50 percent represents 50 out of 100. A fraction uses two numbers to illustrate a section of a whole. When you convert a percentage to a fraction, you also need to reduce the fraction to its simplest terms. Converting a percentage to a fraction is useful for multiplying and dividing, as well as financial calculations.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the percentage over 100. For example, if you have 30 percent and want to convert it to an equivalent fraction, write "30/100."

    • 2

Identify a number that goes into both the numerator and the denominator. In this example, both 30 and 100 are divisible by 2. When you divide 30 by 2, you get 15. And 100 divided 2 is 50. This yields 15/50.

    • 3

Repeat Step 2 until the numerator and denominator share no common divisors except 1. In this example, 15 and 50 are both divisible by 5, so you would get 3/10. Because 3 and 10 have no divisors other than 1, 30 percent equals 3/10.
