Pick a jacket style. Decide whether you would like an all-wool jacket or a wool jacket with leather arms. Would you like a band collar or a hood that opens flat on the back? Choose the style you think looks the best and the most comfortable.
Plan your jacket colors. If you would like your letter jacket to match your teammates' jackets, know the names of the colors in advance or you may end up with something different. What about contrasting buttons, pockets, or neck and wrist bands?
Plan your embroidery. This is the decorative stitching done directly on the jacket. For example, many people have their first names embroidered on the right or left chest of their jackets. Others have their graduating year embroidered. What color will the stitching be?
Plan your chenille patches. These are the nubby designs on felt backings that are sewn to the jacket, such as your high school letter, your name on the back of the jacket, the name of your school mascot, such as "Bulldogs," or a picture of your mascot. Also consider whether you will include custom patches representing your sport, such as a basketball, or another lettering activity, such as a musical note.
Find a company that is a letter jacket dealer. Do some research on your own; ask your high school activities director if the school has a preferred vendor for letter jackets. Alternatively, ask your friends where they ordered their jackets.
Provide your order information. You need to know your sizes---you can't return a custom jacket---so ask in advance to try on some friends' jackets to gauge correct sizing. Specify each choice in order to get just what you want. To keep within your budget, take note of the costs as you add options, or ask the store where you order to give you subtotals as you go.
Pay for your jackets. Because the manufacturer will create a letter jacket customized specifically for each of you, payment is due with your order. Your custom letter jackets should arrive in 3 to 6 weeks, depending on your dealer.
