Letterman Jacket Ideas

Letterman jackets --- also known as varsity jackets --- were originally reserved for high school and college athletes who reached a specified level of achievement. Today, letterman jackets are also popular among academic organizations such as band, choir and debate clubs. They indicate pride in a team or an individual accomplishment, and are available in a variety of design choices, according to Alan Strauss, president and CEO of Nevada's Stewart & Strauss, the company that makes letterman jackets for Fox's "Glee."
  1. Style

    • Letterman jackets are sometimes provided by the school. If you are purchasing your own, you will have more input in its design. Jackets come in three popular styles: classic, retro and hoodie. Purchasers can decide whether they prefer snaps or a zipper front. Sleeve styles can be raglan --- which extend to the collar --- or set-in, stopping at the shoulder.

    Colors

    • Varsity jacket colors are typically chosen to match those of the individual's school or organization. The body of the jacket, generally made of wool, is a darker color. The sleeves, made of leather, come in a contrasting, lighter color.

    Lettering

    • The majority of names and letters are made of chenille. The backing can be a single or double layer of felt. The double layer costs more, but is a sturdier option. You might have a layer of black felt and a smaller layer of white felt under a red chenille letter. Choose to keep borders of the letters in the same color, or opt for a contrasting color. For example, with green letters, choose a gold trim. If you are not sure, stick to the same color.

    Word Placement

    • The school letter is generally about 6 inches in height and placed on the front left chest area. If an individual wants to place his name on the jacket, it is often on the opposite chest pocket. The back of the jacket is generally reserved for the team's logo. Smaller letters, such as the graduation year, are placed on the sleeve.

    Emblems

    • Emblems and mascots characterize a letterman jacket. A musical note or a soccer ball could be chosen. Many companies will create a digitized version of a school's particular emblem. When a person letters in more than one area, he often adds additional patches or pins to his jacket.

    Quotes

    • You might choose to place the organization's motto on your jacket. You can also opt for an inspirational saying, but keep it short. Go online to find quotes that refer to your sport or venue.

    Online Design

    • At websites such as Stewart & Strauss' TheJacketShop.com, you can design your own, custom-made jacket. You will be taken through steps to choose style, color and details. The process is easy to follow.

    Trends

    • Many of the jackets you now see on TV and in movies indicate a trend. Strauss says, "With the advent of music videos, there has been a resurgence of the letterman jacket currently worn as fashion. Many hip-hop and rap artists are now coordinating their custom color jackets with sneakers and other garb."
