Display various sports that require snow or cold weather. Ask students to brainstorm the many winter sports that take place throughout the world. Research images and examples of the sports and print these images from computer graphics or cut them out of magazines to include on the boards. Display examples of athletes competing in snow skiing, ice skating, ice hockey and curling. Label each visual with information of where the sport originated. This is an especially beneficial activity for students who live in warmer climates and do not see snow and cold weather during February.
February is also Black History Month, a time when news reports and school curricula feature important people and famous contributions from African-American citizens. Combine your physical education bulletin board with Black History Month. List significant African-American athletes who propelled their sports in a positive direction. Display an image of Jackie Robinson, for example, who broke Major League Baseball's color barrier. Display pictures of Jesse Owens and Jackie Joyner-Kersee, the famous Olympic track athletes, and Jim Brown, the hall of fame football player for the Cleveland Browns. The possibilities are endless.
February also celebrates the presidents. Arrange your physical education bulletin board with images of current and former U.S. presidents and the sports they loved to play. Post a picture of Theodore Roosevelt, for example. List his favorite sports, including boxing and tennis. Find pictures of Dwight Eisenhower, Gerald Ford and John F. Kennedy in their days as college football players. Post an image of Barack Obama on the White House basketball court and include a synopsis on his love for the game.
Combine physical education bulletin board displays with sports and Valentine's Day. Display images of tennis players, for example, and note that the word "love" denotes a score of zero in this sport. Additionally, post an image of an archery expert and playfully acknowledge that a bow and arrow is also the preferred device of Cupid, the mystical love provocateur. Since gifts of candy and chocolate are often given out on Valentine's Day, post images of candies and their respective nutritional values and health warnings.
