How to Graph in the Third Grade

In the third grade, students explore different ways to record and represent data. Third graders are expected to know how to create scaled bar graphs to show a variety of information. To complete these graphs, the student will require a set of data with several categories and a sheet of graph paper to create the graph. These graphs will then be used to answer a variety of questions based on the represented values, specifically to note how something changes over time or what is the most popular.

Instructions

    • 1

Title the graph based on your data set. The title of the graph should represent the information presented in the graph, for example, "The Most Popular Color in my Classroom."

    • 2

Set a scale for the y-axis (vertical axis) based on the data. Students should be able to decide based on the numbers what scale to use. Draw numbers up the side of your graph to mark the scale.

    • 3

Write the list of the categories presented in your data along the bottom x-axis (horizontal axis).

    • 4

Complete the bar graph by drawing and coloring in bars for each item on your x-axis. The height of the bar should match the appropriate y-axis value.
