How to Round to the Nearest Tens in Third Grade

Rounding a number is helpful when the general amount is a more important factor than the exact number. When you round a number to the nearest tens, you look for the nearest group of ten of the number. For example, if you have a number that is between twenty and thirty, then you would round that number to either twenty or thirty. Learning how to round numbers to the nearest tens in third-grade math provides a foundation for rounding larger and more complicated numbers.

Instructions

- 1
  Find the digit to the right of the tens spot in the number. For example, if the number 361, the digit 1 is to the right of the tens spot number, 6.

  Add 1 to the number in the tens spot if the number to the right of it is five or greater and set the last digit to zero to round the number up. For example, if the number is 756, adding 1 to the tens spot number of 5 and setting the last digit to zero results in 760.
- 3
  Set the last digit of the number to zero and leave the digit in the tens spot unchanged if the last digit is four or less to round the number down. For example, if the number is 8,912, then setting the last digit to zero results in 8,910.
