How to Round Numbers to the Nearest Hundred in Math

Sometimes, the general estimate of a number can outweigh its actual value. As numbers involved in mathematical operations grow larger, smaller numbers are often rounded to larger categories to simplify the math because the difference the rounding makes is minimal. For example, a bakery sells thousands of cakes everyday. To help with delivery and inventory, its supply and ingredient orders are rounded to the nearest hundred. Rounding numbers to the nearest hundred in math aids in seeing the bigger picture when the smaller details don't matter.

Instructions

  Identify the hundreds, tens and ones place of the number. For example, in the number 7,682, the digit in the hundreds place is 6, the tens place digit is 8 and the ones place digit is 2.

  Separate the digit in the tens place and compare it to 5: 8 is greater than 5.

  Add 1 to the number's hundred place if the tens digit is greater than 5; otherwise, leave the hundreds digit unchanged. The hundreds digit 6 becomes 7, as the tens digit 8 is greater than 5.

  Change the tens and ones place digits to 0: 82 becomes 00.
- 5
  Rewrite the number with its new digits. 7,682 becomes 7,700.
