Determine a number you want to round up. For example, round up the number 872.
Determine the place value to which you want to round up and the digit in that place value. For example, round up 872 to the hundreds place, which contains the digit 8.
Find the digit one place to the right of the place value to which you want to round up and check if it is 5 or greater to see if you can round up. In the example, the number 7 is in the tens place, which is one place to the right of the hundreds place, and it is greater than 5, so you can round up.
Increase the digit in the place value you want to round by 1. If the digit in the place value you're rounding up is 9, round the digit up to 10 by making that digit 0 and adding a 1 to the next digit to the left. In the example, increase the digit 8 in the hundreds place by 1, which equals 9.
Change all digits to the right of the rounded place value to 0. In the example, change the number 7 in the tens place and 2 in the ones place to 0. This results in 900 as the number 872 rounded up to the hundreds place.
