How to Round Up Numbers After a Decimal Point

Rounding off is a technique applied on mathematical problems involving decimals. Using this technique, the values occurring after the decimal point are duly approximated based on the consideration that some of these values have a very small effect on the complete answer and they may be ignored. After a number is rounded off, the resulting value becomes more easily expressed. You can either round up or round down. Rounding up is applied in cases when the digit occurring to the right of the digit that is to be rounded up is greater than or equal to five. In rounding up, the last digit in the result is increased by one.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the number to be rounded up on a piece of paper. Assume that you have to round two different numbers to the nearest hundredths: 2.567 and 3.441.

    • 2

Round up 2.567 to the nearest hundredth. You need to observe the digit to the right of the hundredth digit, 6, which is the thousandth digit, 7. Because the thousandth digit is greater than five, the decimal can be rounded up to 2.57.

    • 3

Round 3.441 to the nearest hundredth. Look at the digit to the right of the hundredth digit, 4. The value of this digit is 1. Because it's less than 5, you can conclude by saying that 3.441 cannot be rounded up to the nearest hundredth, though it can be rounded down to 3.44.
