Multiply the divisor to get as close to the first digit of your dividend. In other words, say you are dividing the number 28 (dividend) by 2 (divisor). The first thing to do is multiply 2 by a number that gets it closest to 2; in this case, that number is 1, which becomes the first part of your answer (quotient).
Calculate the division to see if the divisor goes into the dividend an even number of times without leaving anything let over. If the digit cannot be divided evenly by the divisor, you will need to carry that number for use in the division of the following digit.
Carry the number you have left over after dividing the digit as much as possible. For example, if you need to divide 5 by the number 2, you will have a 1 leftover, which you carry over.
Divide the first digit (which is the one farthest to the left side of the number); in other words, if you're dividing the number 952, the first number you divide is going to be the 9. If the divisor doesn't go into this number evenly, you must carry the remainder over to the next digit. For example, say your dividing 952 by the number 7. First, divide 9 by 7. Since 7 goes into 9 one time, you must mark the remainder (2) next to the following digit (5) turning it into 25. Now, divide 25 by 7, which gives you 3 with a remainder of 4. Carry the 4 to the next digit (2) to make 42, then divide 42 by 7, which gives you 6.
