How to Create Word Towers for the Third Grade

Word towers, or stacks of vocabulary cards, are a creative alternative for teaching kids vocabulary. In addition, word towers provide great practice for learning to spell new words. Blending education with games, such as word towers, can help to engage and interest young children in learning. When learning is a fun process, children are much more likely to stay motivated and focused on the task at hand. You can involve your third graders in their education even further by having them create their own word towers.

Instructions

Write one vocabulary word on each index card. Assign one color of card for verbs, one color for nouns and another for adjectives. Write the definitions of each word on the back of the index card. Include an example of the word in a sentence for added learning.

    • 3

Stack the index cards in a pile, forming a word tower. Go through the tower of words with the third graders. An alternative is to let students work on word towers in groups.
