How to Create Pictographs

Teachers often use pictographs or pictograms as learning tools to showcase data by using images to represent that information in graph form. Usually constructed in bar-graph form, pictographs are easy to create on your own or with a computer. The prominent images help you visualize data easier than with numbers alone. Before you begin creating a pictograph, gather all necessary data.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a basic graph. Draw the graph yourself, or use a computer program, such as Microsoft Excel, to help you do so.

    • 2

Title your graph so you know what the graph represents such as, "Students' Favorite Colors."

    • 3

Choose a picture or image to represent data in your graph. If you are using a computer, locate clip art to use for your graph. For instance, use an apple to represent a student.

    • 4

Construct a legend or key to place at the bottom of the graph. Use the legend to indicate what the picture represents. For example, one apple resembles one student.

    • 5

Graph varying data amounts with your chosen picture displayed along the graph accordingly. For instance, if five students claim their favorite color as blue, draw five apples across from the word blue on the graph.
