How to Create a Narrative Report on SurveyMonkey

Surveymonkey is a popular web tool that allows anyone to design a survey. Researchers can use the site to develop experiments or to gather data. In order to properly use Surveymonkey, it's important to know how to read and collect the data. If you're planning to submit your Surveymonkey results to someone else, you'll need to devise a narrative report.

Log in to your Surveymonkey account using your username and password. Click on the "Response Summary" link, which is located underneath the "Analyze" icon on the "My surveys" page. If you have designed more than one survey on Surveymonkey, make sure to click the "Response Summary" icon next to the survey for which you are writing the report. Click on "Download Responses," which will be located on the left side of the page.

Review the data from your survey. Determine which pieces of data are relevant to your narrative report, but be careful not to omit information that skews the results or leads to a misleading conclusion. For example, if you are surveying people on how frequently they put their children in time out, you can choose not to incorporate the ages of children if you feel this data is irrelevant. Avoid, however, eliminating part of the responses to the time out question to change the data to meet your hypothesis.

Draft a narrative report on a word processor. A narrative report can be a simple, written summary of the data. A simple report could read, "65 percent of parents put their children in time out at least once per week" and then provide other relevant statistics. More complex narrative reports can add information about variables that may have affected the research, data collecting methods and other factors. Generally speaking, the more information you provide in a narrative report -- without editorializing -- the more credible the report will be.
