Obtain a copy of the APA Publishing Manual from the library. Earlier editions will serve for an elementary statistics report. Become familiar with how tables and data are formatted in scientific reports.
Write the title of the statistical report in the center on the page with your name written below.
Write an "Abstract." The abstract briefly introduces the topic, provides a summary of results and finishes with conclusions and suggestions for further study. This section is optional for an elementary report.
Write an introduction to your report. Explain the purpose of the statistical study, including a statement of the research problem and the hypothesis being tested if any. Descriptive statistics will analyze a relationship between two variables, while inferential statistics will analyze any significant difference between groups. Elementary statistics do not usually not involve inferences.
Describe the "Population and Sample" under analysis. This could be people, laboratory rats, bolts on cars or whatever you have studied for the report. The population is the entire group, and the samples are the actual participants. Statistical reports ordinarily involve analyzing data about samples within a population.
Describe the "Research Design," if applicable. More likely, you will describe where the data comes from as elementary statistical reports don't usually involve original research.
Write your "Results" section, offering the results of your data analysis. Provide means, standard deviations, correlation coefficients and whatever statistics you used in the report to satisfy the reason the analysis is being done. You will provide the tables supporting the results and the raw data in the Appendix.
Discuss your results and provide your conclusions regarding the data analysis. Provide suggestions for further research, if any.
List your references for your research in a section titled "References." Provide an Appendix of tables of data analysis and raw data to support your results.
