Give the students the supplies they will need. Have them take the oatmeal container or the paper towel roll and cut a piece of cardstock or construction paper to fit the height. Have them wrap the paper around the outside of the container or tube and glue it into place.
Instruct the students to place a plate or bowl on top of a second piece of construction paper and trace the edge with a pencil. Use a large plate or bowl if using the oatmeal container, and a small plate or bowl if using the paper towel roll. Tell the students to cut out the circle they created then cut a line halfway through the circle. Tell the students to fold the circle to create a cone slightly larger than the top of their container. Glue the cone so it retains its shape.
Attach the cone to the top of your container or tube using tape. If using the oatmeal container, make sure the open end is on the bottom. Have the students use a third sheet of construction paper and cut out four triangles. Fold over the small edge of each triangle and attach the folded edge to the rocket on with tape or glue. Space the edges evenly.
Instruct the students to decorate the rockets any way they choose and provide them with markers, crayons or colored pencils so that they can.
