How to Write a Bibliography Page in MLA

Modern Language Association (MLA) style provides a set of rules and guidelines writers follow when constructing research papers. While MLA covers all aspects of writing--from style to paper structure--students and other writers often look to MLA style to provide order to their bibliographies. Many academic departments, particularly those in the humanities, mandate use of MLA format. MLA refers to the bibliography as the "Works Cited" page.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin your MLA Works Cited page on a separate page at the end of your paper. Center the words "Works Cited" at the top of the page, but, as the Purdue University Online Writing Lab (OWL) points out, MLA style prohibits putting this page title in quotations or italicizing it.

    • 2

Double-space all text on your MLA Works Cited page. Indent the second and subsequent lines of each citation five spaces to create a hanging indent.

    • 3

Begin each citation with the last name of the author(s) of the source you are citing. Order the entries alphabetically. Write names using the last name followed by the first name, followed by the middle name or initials (for example: Poe, Edgar Allan).

    • 4

Use three hyphens in lieu of the author's name for each entry after the first when you cite multiple works by the same author. Purdue's OWL explains that if the author for a source does not exist or is unknown, use a shortened version of the work's title that matches the phrase used in your paper's in-text citations.

Refer to the following examples to construct citations for some of the most commonly used sources: books, newspaper articles and scholarly journal articles. Be sure to italicize book titles and publication names.

Murakami, Haruki. Kafka on the Shore. New York: Vintage Books, 2005. Print.

Jones, Bill. "Healthcare Bills Angers Some." Any Land Times 24 May 2010: A2. Print.

White, Betty and Tad Jones. "Social Significance of Cable TV Sitcoms." Journal of Pop Culture 32.1: 112-22. Print.
