How to Format Bibliography Page in MLA

The Modern Language Association (MLA) specifies that researchers in the humanities format their sources into a "Works Cited" page and attach it to the end of their papers. If you have kept careful records of all of your research, organizing your sources into a works cited page is straightforward, even if not all information about a source is available. Creating a works cited page protects your paper from receiving a mark of zero for plagiarism.

Instructions

    • 1

Designate a separate page for the Works Cited page. Do not begin the Works Cited page on the same page your essay ends.

    • 2

Title the page "Works Cited" and center it in the middle of the page. No italics, underlining, bolding or quotation marks are necessary.

    • 3

Format your sources as follows, skipping any irrelevant information: Author's last name, author's first name. Title of book, article, film or image. Title of Publication. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication. Italicize titles of long works, such as books or films. Put quotation marks around shorter works, such as short stories, poems, essays or articles.

    • 4

List entries alphabetically by the author's last name. Write entries as follows, if you are referencing more than one work by the same author: Author's last name, Author's first name. Title. [...] ---. 2nd Title. [...]

    • 5

Double space all entries and indent the second and succeeding lines five spaces.

    • 6

Number the Works Cited page in the top right-hand corner.
