How to Site Pages in MLA Format

MLA (Modern Language Association) format is a style of citation widely used in humanities and liberal arts disciplines. When citing sources in accordance with MLA format, you should cite limited information parenthetically within the text and include full bibliographic information for all sources cited at the end of your paper. In MLA style, page numbers should be listed in your parenthetical citations; it is not necessary to include the page number when listing information on your works cited page.

Instructions

    • 1

List the last name of the author and the page number in parentheses to form your in-text citation. Do not use any marks of punctuation in your citation. For example:

      (Thompson 145)

    • 2

Cite parenthetically within the text whenever you quote, paraphrase or summarize from another author's work. Position your citations directly after a quoted, summarized or paraphrased statement. For example:

It has been effectively argued elsewhere that Stalin had "a list of political enemies kept in his sock drawer" (Thompson 145).

    • 3

Cite only the page number if you mention the name of the author in the text. For example:

Historian John Thompson has effectively argued that Stalin had "a list of political enemies kept in his sock drawer" (145).
