Make a list of all the references you cite in your research paper. Organize the list in alphabetical order by the authors' last names.
Create a new page at the end of your research paper. Title the page "Works Cited" and center the title at the top of the page. Keep the margins the same as they are throughout the rest of your paper, which should be 1 inch. Maintain the same header as well.
Double-space down from the title and begin listing the references, starting with the first one on your alphabetized list. Write the reference according to the medium, remembering that books and periodicals, for instance, have different formatting requirements.
When citing books, capitalize the first letter of the last name of the author, spell out his last name, add a comma and write his first name. Following the author's name, italicize the title of the book. List the place of publication, the publisher and the date of publication at the end. Separate the place of publication and the publisher with a colon. Insert a period at the end of the date to complete this reference. Include the medium; for books it's print. Here is an example: Hemingway, Ernest. The Sun Also Rises. New York: Scribner, 1926. Print.
Cite your periodicals, such as journals and articles, by first listing the author. Capitalize the first letter of the author's last name. Add a comma and write his first name. Put the title of the periodical article in quotation marks. Add the title of the periodical in italics, followed by the date, month and year of the publication. Include the page numbers that the referenced work was taken from at the very end, followed by the medium. Here is an example: Wheeler, David L. "Artificial-Intelligence Researchers Develop Electronic 'Tutors' to Aid Learning Process." Chronicle of Higher Education 20 May 1987: 6-8. Print.
Include websites and online material that you gather from the Internet. To cite electronic sources -- or web publications -- you must use the name of the author. If it is unavailable use the name of the web publication. Write the name of the article in quotation marks, the title of the website in italics, any posting dates, volumes or page numbers that you can find, publisher name and publication date. You must also include the date that the information was taken from the website. Include the URL for the website only if instructed to do so by your teacher. Here is an example: The Purdue OWL Family of Sites. The Writing Lab and OWL at Purdue and Purdue U, 2008. Tues. 22 Feb. 2011.
