How to Type a Bibliography in MLA Form

A proper bibliography is important for any research paper. MLA (Modern Language Association) style citations and bibliographies are most commonly used for papers in the fields of arts and humanities. There are very specific formatting rules that should be followed to create an MLA style bibliography. MLA format for a bibliography ensures that all sources are referenced in an organized manner and can be easily verified.

Instructions

    • 1

Start at the top of a new page on an existing document. Check that margins are set to one inch, and adjust the margins if they are not correct.

    • 2

Include a header at the top of the page containing your last name and the page number of your bibliography. The bibliography is a continuation of the paper, so the numbering should follow the last page number of the paper.

    • 3

Type the title "Works Cited," and center it on the top line of the page. Do not bold or italicize the title. Use the same font style as the paper for the entire bibliography.

    • 4

Double-space the entire document. The entry for each source should be double-spaced, and there should also be one space between entries. Do not put extra spacing beyond one blank line between any lines of text.

    • 5

Left-align the first line of each works cited entry. If the entry is longer than one line, indent the lines that follow five spaces. The indentation makes it easy to see where each entry begins.

    • 6

Order the works cited entries alphabetically. The order is based on the authors' last names. If there is no author, use the first item in the entry.
