All Indiana Area Codes

The North American Numbering Plan Administration assigns area codes. In 1947, Indiana was originally assigned three area codes: 219, 317 and 812. Area code 219 covered northern Indiana, area code 317 covered central Indiana and area code 812 covered southern Indiana. Faxes, pagers, cellular phones and Internet service have made the demand for telephone numbers increase dramatically to the point that numbers in the area codes were being depleted. To keep up with demand, NANPA maximized current numbers and implemented new area codes.
  1. Area Code 219

    • Area code 219 covers the northwest section of Indiana. The largest cities in the area code include Gary, Hammond, Highland, Hobart, Merrillville, Michigan City, Munster, Portage, Schererville and Valparaiso. A portion of the area code is in the Eastern time zone and a portion is in the Central time zone. In 2002, area code 219 was split three ways: area code 219, area code 260 and area code 574. The 2010 Exhaust Analysis predicts that the 219 area code will be exhausted in the year 2031.

    Area Code 260

    • Area code 260 covers the northeast section of Indiana. The largest city in the area code is the Fort Wayne area. The area code is in the Eastern time zone. The 2010 Exhaust Analysis predicts that the 260 area code will be exhausted in the year 2034.

    Area Code 317

    • Area code 317 covers metro Indianapolis. The largest cities in the area code include Carmel, Fishers, Greenwood, Indianapolis, Lawrence and Noblesville. The area code is in the Eastern time zone. In 1997, area code 317 was split into area code 317 and area code 765. The 2010 Exhaust Analysis predicts that the 317 area code will be exhausted in the year 2017.

    Area Code 574

    • Area code 574 covers north-central Indiana. The largest cities in the area code include Elkhart, Goshen, Granger, La Porte, Mishawaka and South Bend. A portion of the area code is in the Eastern time zone and a portion is in the Central time zone. The 2010 Exhaust Analysis predicts that the 574 area code will be exhausted in the year 2036.

    Area Code 765

    • Area code 765 covers central Indiana, excluding metro Indianapolis. The largest cities in the area code include Highland, Indianapolis, Kokomo, Lafayette, Marion, Muncie, Richmond and West Lafayette. The area code is in the Eastern time zone. The 2010 Exhaust Analysis predicts that the 765 area code will be exhausted in the year 2018.

    Area Code 812

    • Area code 812 covers southern Indiana. The largest cities in the area code include Bloomington, Clarksville, Columbus, Evansville, Jeffersonville, New Albany and Terre Haute. A portion of the area code is in the Eastern time zone and a portion is in the Central time zone. The 812 area code is the only one of the original area codes not to have experienced a split. The 2010 Exhaust Analysis predicts that the 812 area code will be exhausted in the year 2013.
