Choose a space you're comfortable with. Creating a productive writing space depends on the person using it. Some writers prefer small corners, while others can't write unless surrounded by space. Some people write next to a window; others can't bear the distraction. The writing space needs to serve your personality.
Inspect the writing area for outlets. A word processor and a printer are necessary, even if you do some work using pen and paper. Make sure the outlets work or assemble extension cords to bring electricity to the writing space.
Light the area well. Working in a dimly lit area isn't good for your eyes. A well-lighted area is better for handwritten work and for reading pages you've printed out.
Find a desk that makes you comfortable. If your couch or bed is where you like to write, set up a writing area next to it. If you're going to spend most of your time at the desk, a comfortable chair is essential.
Position a filing cabinet or crates next to the desk. The cabinet or crates should be easily accessible with a slide of your desk chair. Either can store supplies and drafts of your work.
